Taking Time

One of the best things you can do for your tango is take time- allow the dance to breathe and use delicately timed pauses to enhance your musicality and consider your next movement. The ability to pause or stretch a movement over several beats is one of our greatest assets in tango.

You can bring this idea into your practice by moving through a song with a partner as slowly as you can, challenging your balance and finding new, interesting choices and pathways from otherwise habitual movements.

Below is a time lapse video I took of myself improvising over the course of several minutes, moving as slowly as I could to try and find new ideas rather than those my body naturally performs at speed.
